Lake Karakul, 200 km from Kashgar in Xinjiang Province is one of the world's most dramatic freshwater lakes. The bright blue waters of the lake shimmer under the snow-capped peaks of 7546 meters high Mount Mutzagata, Kongur Tagh at 7649 meters and Kongur Tiube at 7530 meters.
Strangely then the name Karakul means "Black Lake" in Kirgiz.

Fresh water originates from the lake so swimming in the water is forbidden. There are a couple of buses each day on the Karakoram Highway from Kashgar or taxis.
