On 1 and 2 December 2020, Christie's held two live auctions of Chinese Paintings – Fine Chinese Modern and Contemporary Ink Paintings and Fine Chinese Classical Paintings and Calligraphy.
The combined sales realized a total of HK$315,610,000 / US$40,907,310, with the top lots of each sale selling for multiple times over their estimates. The results demonstrate Christie's ability to offer renowned private collections and coveted works by Chinese masters.
Sale Highlights Both Chinese Paintings sales surpassed their pre-sale high estimates
- 62% of lots sold above high estimates across the combined sales. The Chen Lifu Collection was 100% sold, achieving HK$17,100,000 / US$2,217,158, nearly tripling its pre-sale high estimate Kim Yu, International Specialist Head of Chinese Paintings Department, commented, "The results from our sales this season are a testament to Christie's strength in selling private collections of Chinese paintings.Not only did works by master artists such as Wu Guanzhong, Fu Baoshi, Shen Zhou and Wen Zhengming perform extremely well, but a number of pieces this season achieved sale totals multiple times over their low estimates, further demonstrating Christie's ability to offer the most coveted Chinese paintings to the most distinguished collectors."
